Equality Of Opportunity And Diversity Of Thought

 To say that the last year has been difficult for the whole school community would be an understatement.

It has occasionally been tough and difficult to transition completely to virtual learning and to a long period of forced seclusion.

When the security guy in my building asked us for a spare phone, it gave me a sobering reminder of how difficult things really were. As it turned out, his family only owned one smartphone, so he had to bring it to work. Due to this, his 8-year-old son was unable to participate in the online classes that his school had set up for him.

We are fortunate enough not to face such fundamental barriers to learning within our school community. With online courses, blended learning possibilities, and the enrichment programme, we have given our students the tools they need to succeed. It did, however, make me consider what other inequities and differences in circumstance we routinely overlook.

Different people will respond differently if you ask them how they view diversity. In corporate India, diversity primarily refers to the presence of more women in leadership positions. For a school like ours, it's about providing students from different nations with varying levels of language skill with a worthwhile teaching and learning experience. There is more to variety than just our physical characteristics, said Roy Gluckman, an authority on the subject, a licenced attorney of the High Court of South Africa, and the founder of Cohesion Collective, during his workshop at the IB Virtual Conference 2020. The most difficult of all challenges is diversity of thought and sentiment because different ideas and ideologies are deeply embedded in us, frequently generational, and signify conflicts that are difficult to overcome.

People who identify as liberal or conservative, right- or left-wing, religious or agnostic, have more real distinctions than those who only have a different appearance or speech in today's society. One of the problems our world faces today is the multiplicity of ideas and the lack of tools to make sense of them.

One of the most crucial skills we can teach our students as educators is how to deal with this diversity of thought and ideas. These skills include the ability to understand another person's point of view, even if it differs from your own; to entertain an idea for the purpose of discussion without accepting it; and the intellectual flexibility to alter your opinion when presented with new information or arguments. This, in my opinion, is a new approach for us to think about diversity, inclusion, and our responsibility as educators.

Another very related but crucial and misunderstood notion is "equality." True equality means treating different people differently, Roy Gluckman noted in the same IB Virtual Conference workshop that I previously described.

Consider This for a Moment:

Treating individuals differently to allow access to equal opportunity is what true equality entails. This is far better illustrated in the graphic below than it is in words.

 

My extra phone is now being used by the kid of the security guard of my building to attend his online studies. Numerous other kids could not be as fortunate and might not be able to resume their studies till the actual opening of the schools.
